The COVID Information Commons

Abstract: The COVID Information Commons (CIC) ( https://covidinfocommons.net/ ) is an open website to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration across COVID research efforts. The initial focus of the CIC website is on NSF-funded COVID Rapid Response Research (RAPID) projects. The CIC serves as a resource for researchers, students and decision-makers from academia, government, not-for-profits and industry to identify collaboration opportunities, to leverage each other's research findings, and to accelerate the most promising research to mitigate the broad societal impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CIC provides multiple search mechanisms to access customized views of the NSF COVID awards database. Contextual and keyword searches provide researchers and students the opportunity to identify research relevant to their work, and potential collaborators . The COVID Research Explorer Machine Learning tool clusters awards in topographical and polygonal tree maps with keyword labels. Each NSF award represented has a drill-down capability to identify the award number, institution, Principal Investigator (PI) name and email, state, award amount, abstract, and other available information. Enhancements to the CIC are being developed to include information provided by the COVID RAPID PIs to provide valuable context, shared learnings and research outcomes to enhance collaboration.

The COVID Information Commons is funded by the NSF Convergence Accelerator, COVID RAPID Award #2028999. The CIC was developed as a collaborative proposal led by the Northeast Big Data Innovation Hub hosted by Columbia University, in collaboration with the Midwest Big Data Innovation Hub, South Big Data Innovation Hub, and West Big Data Innovation Hub. The award commenced in May 2020 and the COVID Information Commons was launched in July 2020.

We will share views of using the COVID Information Commons, and seek input on potential opportunities to enhance its value to the community.
